The growth from each branch is supportive of the whole and extends beyond the boundary of function. We live our lives alongside nature while utilizing its peaceful offerings. Ghost Garden embodies our sense of hope for co-existence and healing around our landscapes.
This first Ghost Garden piece is created as a collaboration work with a studio partner at the time Evan Fay in 2020. After the completion this piece was presented at a group exhibition Never Normal at Wasserman Projects Gallery in Detroit in 2020.
We first came up with the idea and drew the concept sketch of a shelf where tree-like sculptures grow beyond the shelving surfaces. When I was gardening, I kept seeing trees, bushes, weeds, and plants growing towards the sunlight wherever they had space. I enjoyed what I touched and smelled while gardening and appreciated their healing power for us. We wanted to express this beautiful natural power through the Ghost Garden series.
All the connections and tips have golden brass joints, emphasizing the natural beauty and strength, created with handcrafted techniques involving brass brazing, filing, and sanding. The Ghost Garden series expresses the power of nature as well as our hope that nature and human society can live together in harmony when we care for the balance of our landscapes.
